We are in our 50’s now.  At 40 I had a major health crisis which left me physically disabled and unable to work.  We needed a more accessible house and garden so we moved to this property in 1999 after doing a major renovation and addition to the house.  The garden started tentatively because I was unsure at first what I’d be capable of doing/managing.  The garden has become an important physical, intellectual/creative outlet.  My physical limitations affect the design and maintenance of the garden since I try to ensure that things are set up in a way that allows me, as much as possible, to do much of the care of the garden.  DH (early) retired in the summer 2009 and he has become a valuable garden assistant.  All the digging of large planting holes and carting about of heavy materials are on his chore list! 🙂
